In the early morning hours we depart Sarajevo and make our way towards the interior of Bjelasnica. Along the way we meet the occasional shepherd with his sheep grazing on the steep slopes of Bjelasnica.. After an hour we park our vehicle in Dugo Polje (1,480m). The view from within the valley is endless and filled with the yellow and purple flowers so characteristic of summer. Here we begin our one and a half hour gradual climb to Greda (1,856m), a beautiful pass in between Krvavac (Bjelasnica's Bloody peak and second highest peak 2,062 m) and Debela Brda (1,987m). Here we are treated to today's prize, views of: Bjelasnica's highest peaks, Treskavica, Visocica, Zelengora, Jahorina....

From this point we will decide whether we explore a steep one and a half hour rocky climb up to Krvavac through thick alpine pine, or an equally satisfying one hour hike through open terrain up to Mali Lelijen (1,938m). Where ever we go you will be treated to fantastic views of a side of Bjelasnica few get to see. The peaks are our lunch and rest spot where we soak in the magical feeling of being all alone. After lunch we wind our way down to the Grkarica water source a true life saver in the warm months of summer. Leaving the source behind we hike down via a summer settlement back to the vehicle. Canyon Bijela is a 2 hours drive away from Sarajevo on the road to Mostar. Our trail starts at one of the numerous "fjords" created by the rising waters of the Neretva and winds slowly up into one of Herzegovina's roughest canyons "Bijela". After 15 minutes following the small Bijela stream we cross over and start our slow but sure ascent up through the canyon. We follow an old trail used by villagers in the sixties and an occasional hunter. Parts of the trail might be overgrown, and adds to the adventure. The area is known for its land turtles, beautiful snakes and lizards. Bijela is a wild canyon hidden from the main road which few people ever visit. This makes it a truly special place with exquisite views of Prenj, Bosnia's Himalayas.
Our hike up the canyon will take us about 3 hours, ascending a little over 400 meters. It's refreshing and most of the time leads us through thick beach wood and Bream forests. All along the trail we see remains of a settlement long gone, i.e. graveyard, an occasional abandoned old stone house, walls, and orchards.

We will have our lunch next to the river and and a mountain hut and depending on the weather you'll have an excellent opportunity for a cold dip in Bijela. Here deep in the heart of the canyon we encounter rare species of pine and flowers. Be prepared for some bush walking, because you are in for a wild treat..... beautiful vertical rock faces towering 1,000 meters above us. Who knows we might even see wild goats and the occasional deer. This hike will take us about 6 hours, climbing not more than 300 meters. We return the same way we came slowly pulling ourselves out of this mystical canyon and towards a realization that Bosnia and Herzegovina's nature is just incredibly beautiful and unspoiled.
